Nobody was really ever planning on Dennis Pitta ever returning to the Baltimore Ravens after breaking his right hip back-to-back years but not it seems like things are officially over for him. The Ravens had to choose whether Pitta would be put on the active roster from the physically unable to perform list or placed on season-ending injured reserve and after doctors recommended Pitta never play again, and ultimately a decision by Pitta himself, he was put on injured reserve.
A few weeks ago Pitta returned to practice and Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said he would not have any problems putting Pitta out on the field if he felt he could physically compete. On Wednesday morning doctors essentially recommended that Pitta hang up his cleats. On Wednesday afternoon the Ravens placed Pitta on season-ending injured reserve. Ultimately it was Pitta’s final decision what would happen.
It was very unfortunate for the Ravens. They thought they found a gem in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL draft after the BYU prospect caught 101 passes for 1,074 yards and 10 touchdowns through the 2011 and 2012 seasons. He was a major reason why the Ravens won the Super Bowl in 2012 as well, but during the next year’s training camp he broke his hip. After returning at the end of the year and playing the start of the following season, Pitta broke his same hip again. It was clearly over right then.
It would not all be surprised if Pitta officially files his retirement papers in the offseason. He is still in the middle of a five-year, $32 million contract in which $16 million was guaranteed, but there is probably no point for him to try to come back.
Pitta’s story is a story that claims a lot of promising careers; injuries are just a sad part of the game. The Ravens absolutely could have used a receiving threat like him, but they have also committed to bringing in talented tight ends to bolster the roster. Crockett Gillmore was picked in the third round of the 2014 draft. Maxx Williams and Nick Boyle were second and fifth round picks this year, respectively.
Even the Ravens were very much prepared for what appears to be the end of Pitta’s career.
