Al Golden may have gotten fired from Miami but he should be very high on the list of candidates for Maryland.

By: Corey Johns

Al Golden never got a fair shake in Miami. He thought he was taking over one of the elite programs in the country in a hotbed for football recruits with a rich history he could sell to those top high school players. Instead, though, Golden got a team that ended up facing NCAA sanctions, lost scholarships, tight rules on recruiting, and a self-imposed two-year postseason ban.

It was not the ideal situation but the fact that Miami did not completely crumble in the wake of the Nevin Shapiro scandals is something Golden should get a lot of credit for. Things could have been much worse in Coral Gables, but the 58-0 loss to Clemson, the worst in Miami’s history, made it easy for the Athletic Department to make a coaching change.

But Miami’s trash could be Maryland’s treasure.

Just remember, no coach was hotter than Golden after he built Temple, before he was hired at Miami. He is a guy who can recruit well (Miami is slated to bring in the No. 10 recruiting class in the country next year) and he has shown he can build a program with less to work with than Maryland does.

Miami did not work out for Golden, but nobody was going to have success there. The situation did not allow it and his best team that won the Atlantic Division never had an opportunity to even play for an ACC title because of the postseason ban.

Considering Golden recruited the Maryland - Pennsylvania area so well at Temple, he would be perfect for Maryland. And he is way more realistic than names being mentioned like Chip Kelly, John Harbaugh or Sean Payton.

Maryland simply needs to hire the best coach they can get this year and they have to become relevant and get to Bowl Games. Golden could help them get there.
