Ravens should look at other options than Schaub

It is clear Matt Schaub is not capable of playing quarterback in the NFL anymore so the Ravens should look elsewhere so they can test options for next year’s backup quarterback.

When the Ravens choose to sign Matt Schaub as the Joe Flacco’s backup in the offseason the idea behind it was clear. They wanted a veteran with starting experience just in case something were to happen to Flacco. Clearly, the Ravens were not seeing what they had hoped out of former sixth round draft pick Keith Wenning and knew that Tyrod Taylor was headed for bigger and better things as a potential starter in the league. At the time, it seemed like Schaub was a perfect backup. But in reality, the perfect backup is a guy who never has to see the field and when Flacco suffered the first major injury of his career and Schaub was forced to start the Ravens’ last two games he was no longer the perfect backup, he was a terrible starter.
Schaub one time used to be a 4,500-yard passer and was helping the Houston Texans franchise turn the corner to become a very competitive team and AFC South Champion. But he is nowhere near being that guy any more. Schaub’s arm is far from a rocket anymore, more like a water pistol. He has no zip on his passes and defenders have so much time to jump the slow-moving throw and it has led to pick-six after pick-six.
It’s really crazy how Schaub continues to throw as many interceptions that get returned for a touchdown as he does but there is a clear reason for why it keeps happening. He is not capable of playing quarterback any more.
With the Ravens standing at 4-8, even with little to no hope of making the playoffs, they should explorer better options as quarterback that will put them in a position to win. After Flacco went down the Ravens signed former busted second-round pick Jimmy Clausen, who was bad in Carolina and bad in Chicago, because he has familiarity with Marc Trestman’s system they brought him aboard. When Schaub was hit hard and there was a possibility that he would have to be taken out of the game against the Dolphins because of a concussion, Clausen warmed up. He did not get in the game but even despite his history the Ravens should see what he can do in the game with the Ravens to see if maybe he can he the backup quarterback next year.
If not Clausen, then the Ravens should consider signing a young quarterback off a practice squad to just see what they can do, because there is absolutely no point in seeing what Schaub can do any more. Clearly, he cannot be in the future plans as the team’s backup quarterback and these last four weeks should be used to evaluate what they have for next year.
